The seat for NC Supreme Court remains unfilled after the 2024 election with results under legal review due to challenges filed by Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin. Recently, the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Judge Jefferson Griffin, allowing thousands of ballots to be tossed out in the race unless voters can provide ‘missing information’.
To find out if your ballot has been challenged, use the form below. Enter your county, first name, and last name, and we’ll check if your vote has been flagged. If so, you’ll receive more details on the issue and next steps. (We do not collect data from this form and your submission is only used to search the list of affected voters.)

My ballot was challenged, what do I do now?
If your ballot was challenged in the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court race, follow these steps to ensure your vote counts:
- Missing Information: If your registration lacks a driver’s license number or last four digits of your Social Security number, you may be contacted to provide this information to your county board of elections.
- Military and Overseas Voters: If you submitted an absentee ballot, you may need to provide a photo ID to verify your vote for the Supreme Court contest.
- Update Your Voter Registration: If your registration is incomplete or outdated, update it online at payments.ncdot.gov (if you have a DMV license) or by submitting a paper form at ncsbe.gov/registering.
According to the NC State Board of Election, “any voter who is concerned that their voter registration information is incomplete or is not up to date should submit an updated voter registration form. Submitting an updated voter registration form is easy. Any voter who has a license from the DMV can go to payments.ncdot.gov to fill out a voter registration application. If you’re already registered, submitting this information will merely update your existing voter registration. You don’t need to create a special account with the DMV. You can select “Continue as Guest” on the DMV’s website and proceed directly to submitting your voter registration.”
If you don’t have a license from the DMV, you can download a voter registration form at ncsbe.gov/registering, and then print, sign, and submit that paper form to your county board of elections.

Why was my ballot challenged?
The reason for your ballot being challenged is listed under the “Reason” section in the results.
- Incomplete Registration: This means your voter registration form may be missing required information or documentation, or the information couldn’t be verified (such as a missing driver’s license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number). Your ballot may be challenged even if you have already provided this information, if election officials were not able to verify the data. (See this information from the NC SBoE website).
- UOCAVA: A UOCAVA challenge involves ballots from military or overseas voters who used absentee ballots to provide a copy of their photo identification.
- FPCA: An FPCA challenge applies to absentee ballots submitted using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), which is used by military and overseas voters to request absentee ballots. If your ballot was challenged under this reason, it likely means there was an issue with the eligibility or the completion of the FPCA form, such as missing information or failure to follow proper procedures.
Verify your match
Due to the fact that the list of affected voters provided by the N.C. State Board of Elections did not include a middle name or middle initial. For this reason, it is possible, that if two people have the same name, and live at the same address (example, father and son), that the result found may be either person.
In this case you can verify the result found is you by checking your voter id against your voter registration card, or look up your voter id using the N.C. Board of Elections voter lookup tool here.
You can also verify the match, by checking the list at the end of the official challenge for your county filled by Griffin
If I don’t resolve the challenge, will my entire ballot be thrown out?
No, the ballot challenges are only for the seat on the N.C. Supreme Court and does not affect votes cast in other races on the ballot.
