ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – Earlier this month, a speed radar trailer used by the Asheboro Police Department was damaged after an officer failed to secure it properly before towing.

According to the accident report, on September 11, 2023, around 3 p.m., the trailer detached from the police vehicle that was towing it while on on US-220 Business. The trailer then rolled an estimated fifty feet along the roadway before coming to a stop on its side.

The says the cuase of the accident was an officer failing to properly secure the trailer prior to being transported.

The trailer, a MPH Street Scout model, was purchased by the department in February of 2020 for $7,263.13, is used primarily for public education and includes a traffic monitoring feature that records vehicle speeds. That data then assists the department in understanding driver behavior and helps in deploying personnel effectively to address community concerns.

Robbie Brown, Assistant Chief of Police, stated that the department would not be filing a claim with the city’s insurance for the damages.

“In this case, since our officers had contributing factors, we will not be turning anything in on our insurance. Any repairs to the trailer will have to be paid for from our current year’s budget.”

No estimate for the cost of repairs was avilable.
