ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – A vehicle pursuit that began in Asheboro concluded with an arrest in Montgomery County this evening.
The Asheboro Police Department was unavailable for immediate comment. According to 911 radio traffic, the chase started in or near Asheboro, eventually continuing on I-73/74 Southbound for over 20 miles into Montgomery County, with speeds reaching up to 120 mph. The pursuit involved officers from the Asheboro Police Department, deputies from Randolph and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Offices, and NC Highway Patrol troopers. At the time of publication, details on the suspect’s identity, reasons for fleeing, and charges had not been disclosed. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
UPDATE, AUGUST 24, 2021 2:45 P.M.
This afternoon, more details were released regarding the vehicle pursuit that ended in an arrest in Montgomery County yesterday. According to the Asheboro Police Department, officers responded to a call on South Fayetteville Street near Wainman Avenue involving a wanted individual.
The suspect, Daevon Corbett-Long, was confirmed by officers to have active felony warrants from Greensboro Police. When officers arrived, Corbett-Long noticed them and fled to his vehicle. He accelerated in reverse, turned the vehicle, and sped away towards Fayetteville Street, refusing to stop.
The chase proceeded south on Interstate 73, with the suspect reportedly reaching speeds of 120 mph. He was ultimately apprehended by Asheboro Police near the Star exit in Montgomery County after his vehicle ran out of gas.
Corbett-Long was transported to the Randolph County Jail, where he was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest and assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer. Additionally, he was served with the outstanding warrants from Greensboro. He is being held on a $25,000 secured bond for the chase-related charges, with an additional $100,000 bond for the Greensboro warrants.
Police confirmed that no injuries or vehicle damage resulted from the pursuit.
