ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with a 2021 double homicide that left two people dead and a toddler wounded, authorities said Tuesday.

Roberto Lee McIntyre Jr. was taken into custody Tuesday morning by the Asheboro Police Department, with assistance from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. McIntyre is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The arrest follows a five-year investigation into the Jan. 21, 2021, shooting at the Coleridge Apartments located on Kemp Blvd. Officers found 25-year-old Eli Junior Gainey and 16-year-old Kyreese Daquan Barrino suffering from fatal gunshot wounds near a parked vehicle. Both died at the scene.

A third victim, a 2-year-old juvenile was also shot during the incident. The child survived the attack and was later listed in stable condition.

Investigators stated early in the case that the shooting was not a random act and that the victims were the intended targets. While McIntyre was quickly identified as a person of interest, police said extensive forensic analysis of evidence was required to confirm him as the suspect.

Warrants for McIntyre’s arrest were obtained Feb. 16, 2026, after investigators consulted with the District Attorney’s Office. At the time of his arrest, McIntyre was already under active supervision for prior felony and misdemeanor convictions in Rowan and Davidson counties.

McIntyre was transported to the Randolph County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.
