LIBERTY N.C. (ACME NEWS) – A Liberty man was arrested after an hours-long stand-off with police Thursday evening.

According to Chief DJ Semrad with the Liberty Police Department, at approximately 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, officers with the Liberty Police Department responded to a 911 call for an alleged assault and domestic situation at 209 W Raleigh Ave.

The officers noted injuries on the victim and the suspect, Kenneth Powell, who was reportedly armed, barricaded himself in a room of the house.

Warrants for assault on a female and resisting, delaying and/or obstructing a law enforcement officer were obtained and the Randolph County SIRT team was asked to assist with the situation. Several agencies including Ramseur PD, Asheboro PD, Archdale PD, RCSO, Liberty Fire Department, and Liberty Public Works all responded to the scene.

Negotiations were unsuccessful for several hours before chemical irritants (tear gas and pepper balls) were deployed. Mr. Powell exited the house yelling at police, but ultimately surrendered to police and was taken into custody by the SIRT team. No injuries were reported.

“This incident exemplifies the close cooperation between Randolph County Law Enforcement Agencies,” said Chief Semrad.

Mr. Powell was placed under a $5000 bond with the additional requirement of electronic house arrest upon release.
