ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) — Crews today were working to repair a ruptured water main that sent water spraying over 30 feet into the air early this morning.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. Randolph County 9-1-1 reported receiving multiple 9-1-1 calls about a hole in the road with water gushing out on Tucker Street in Asheboro. A later call reported water spraying onto power lines and a nearby home.

A fire crew with Asheboro Fire & Rescue was dispatched and the City’s Public Works department was notified. When emergency crews arrived on the scene on Tucker Street, they found a large hole in the street just before the intersection with Cross Street, with water spraying over 30 feet into the air.

In a phone call earlier today, officials with the City of Asheboro confirmed that repairs were underway, saying that “crews will stay out until repairs are complete today.”  As of 3 p.m. today, repairs were complete and the road has re-opened.

The exact cause of the pipe break was unknown, but officials noted that factors such as weather, aging pipes, and ground shifting can sometimes contribute to water main failures. According to the city’s website, “cold weather, extreme heat, and temperature fluctuations can cause changes in the soil around pipes, creating pressure that may result in a break.”

No injuries were reported.
