ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – The Asheboro Fire Department is mourning the loss of Battalion Chief Chris Hoover, a dedicated firefighter who served with the department for 24 years.
Chief Hoover, also a member of the Tabernacle Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and Ash-Rand Rescue, passed away on January 8, 2022, after battling COVID-19.
In a solemn display of respect and camaraderie, firefighters from Asheboro traveled to UNC Medical Center on Sunday to escort Chief Hoover’s casket home. As they made their way back, fellow firefighters from across the state lined the route to honor his service and pay tribute to their fallen brother.

Battalion Chief Chris Hoover with Asheboro Fire Department lost his hard-fought battle with Covid-19 on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at UNC Medical in Chapel Hill. Chief Hoover served with Asheboro Fire Department for 24 years, Tabernacle Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and Ash-Rand Rescue. He was 47 years old. He was a mentor and leader to many, but more importantly, he was a great friend and was always there to help out however he could. Asheboro Fire sends their condolences to the Hoover family. Asheboro Fire would also like to thank the community for its outpouring of support and the fire departments and organizations that have assisted AFD throughout this difficult time.

Chris Hoover was a true hometown hero. Throughout his 20 plus years of service to the community he helped countless people. His passing is a great loss to the department and our community. The thoughts of all of us at Acme News are with his family during this challenging time.
