OUR FINDINGS

This post is nearly identical to other posts around the country, being distributed in local Facebook groups. You can find copies of this same post in groups in Florida, New York, and other states.

Manny of these were posted by the same account. Which contains no information other than a name and a profile photo — which was taken from an Instagram account for ‘familyfizz’ , a family of six who promote an online affiliate store.

This post appears to have evolved from an older post, which was also spread around the country in local Facebook groups near the end of January.

Many of these older posts have already been widely fact checked by other sources, such as PolitiFact, who reported that the male show in the older post, was Roberto Dominguez Soto, a man wanted by police in Georgia, as a suspect in the death of his late girlfriend, citing Atlanta’s WAGA-TV reporting on Jan. 13.

On Jan 29, 2025, the Pascagoula Police Department posted on Facebook that the post was ‘false information.’ The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Acme News, that the post is fake and that locally no officers or deputies had been murdered to their knowledge.

In early January, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, announced major changes to its content moderation policies, including ending of third party fact-checking organizations and the switch a community notes system – similar to what’s used by the X platform.

Older versions of the post do contain community notes at the bottom of the post, however, it requires the user to click on the link to see links to a fact check, and many users are not familiar with the feature or how to add community notes.

According to Google search results, the webpage announcing the new community notes feature for Meta was launched on Feb. 20, 2025.
