ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a large fire that broke out on March 14, 2022, at a junkyard on Idlewild Drive Extension in Randleman, destroying multiple buildings and over a dozen vehicles.
The fire was reported just after 6:30 p.m., and crews from Randleman, Asheboro, Sophia, Westside, and Climax Fire Departments responded. According to Michael Smith, Fire Marshal with the Randleman Fire Department, the fire involved around 15 vehicles, two small outbuildings, a large garage, and a mobile home.
The blaze was brought under control within approximately an hour and a half, but firefighters stayed on the scene for over five hours for overhaul and cleanup. Firefighters returned the next morning to extinguish remaining hotspots.
No injuries were reported, though one person was displaced and is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with NC Forestry Services also examining the incident as a potential criminal matter.
