ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – A crazy moment for witnesses on Monday afternoon in Asheboro after a knife wielding man on Sunset Ave had to be subdued with a taser.
According to Robbie Brown, Assistant Chief of Police with the Asheboro Police Department, on May 23rd, 2022, just before 4 p.m., officers with the department’s patrol division responded to 615 Sunset Avenue in reference to a welfare check on a shirtless male who was yelling.Â
Prior to officers arriving on-scene, 9-1-1 callers had reported that the man was armed with a knife in the parking lot of the former Courier-Tribune building and was attempting to jump in front of vehicles.Â
When officers arrived they located the male who continually refused to drop his knife and was repeatedly yelling at the officers. According to witnesses in the area, officers had guns drawn pointing at the male.
According to the police, after multiple attempts to speak with the male and get him to drop the knife were unsuccessful an officer deployed their Taser, allowing officers to subdue the subject and take him into custody.
Police say the male was transported by EMS to a local medical facility for a mental evaluation and no charges have been filed. The name of the subject was not released due to medical privacy policies.
