ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — The North Carolina Zoo marked a significant milestone this month as it welcomed its 30 millionth visitor since opening in 1974.

In April, the Zoo set a new record for single-month attendance with 192,000 guests. Now, the world’s largest natural habitat zoo has reached another landmark with Maria Ines Perez, the 30 millionth guest, who entered the North America gates with her family to a warm welcome from Zoo staff.

This achievement comes as the Zoo continues to experience record attendance numbers, reflecting its enduring popularity almost five decades after opening.

Perez, a first-time visitor to the Zoo, expressed her surprise and delight at the recognition. “It was a real surprise for us and a great gift for my little ones,” she said. “We are grateful to the Zoo team for making it possible, and we are excited to share with friends so they can also experience the North Carolina Zoo!”

Perez and her family received a gift basket that included a lifetime family membership from the North Carolina Zoo Society, a private animal encounter, a Zoofari tour, meal vouchers courtesy of the Zoo’s food service provider, and various Zoo-themed memorabilia.

Patricia Simmons, Zoo Director and CEO, reflected on the milestone, stating, “As we celebrate 50 WILD YEARS at the North Carolina Zoo, we give thanks to those who laid the groundwork for us to evolve into the organization we are today. Reaching 30 million all-time guests is a testament to the profound impact of the North Carolina Zoo on our community and beyond. Every visit contributes to our conservation efforts locally and around the world. This milestone marks another significant chapter in our story and reminds us of how far we’ve come.”

With 50 years of history behind it, the North Carolina Zoo continues to thrive as a beloved destination, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond to witness its dedication to wildlife conservation and natural habitats.
