ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) – Police are investigating a stabbing at Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro with one victim.
Just after 3 p.m on the afternoon of June 15th, 2023, emergency crews were dispatched to Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro a report of a stabbing near the park’s fountain.
First responders located a male victim who was bleeding from multiple stab wounds. Fire fighters and EMS provided emergency medical treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to a nearby hospital. The victim’s current condition has not been publicly released.
The suspect was seen fleeing the park on foot shortly before officers arrived. In an attempt to locate the attacker who had fled the scene, the Asheboro Police Department deployed a K9 unit to search the area.
As of now, detectives and investigators remain on the scene collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the stabbing.
No further information was available at the time of publication as the investigation is still on-going.
UPDATE – Suspect Arrested in Connection with the Stabbing
As of 1:30 p.m. on June 16th, the Asheboro Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the stabbing.
According to Assistant Chief Robbie Brown, officers managed to track down the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Mason Bryce Wooten, just a short distance from the scene. He was taken into custody without incident.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reportedly told officers that a white male was seen attacking the victim, repeatedly stabbing him before fleeing. Authorities have not yet released information on the possible motives or any relationship between Wooten and the victim
Wooten has been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and is being held in the Randolph County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.
