UWHARRIE NATIONAL FOREST, N.C. — The U.S. Forest Service has issued a warning for visitors to exercise caution following a recent coyote attack on the Uwharrie Trail.

Early Saturday morning, two people sustained minor injuries after being attacked by a coyote near Big Island Creek on the Uwharrie Trail. The U.S. Forest Service, along with North Carolina state officials, is working to locate the animal involved.

In a press release, officials noted that wildlife encounters, including those with coyotes, are not uncommon in Uwharrie National Forest. The Forest Service provided the following safety tips for visitors:

  • Check for alerts: Before visiting, contact the District Ranger’s office (open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or visit the National Forests in North Carolina’s website for updates on safety and trail conditions.
  • Avoid approaching wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from all animals. If you encounter wildlife in distress, notify the District Ranger’s office or local animal control.
  • Secure food and trash: To minimize wildlife encounters while camping, store food and dispose of trash at least 100 yards from sleeping areas.
  • Seek medical attention if injured: In the event of an accidental wildlife encounter resulting in injury, get medical help immediately.
