ASHEBORO, N.C. — A mother and son were airlifted to nearby hospitals Wednesday after escaping a house fire on Old Coleridge Road near the Chatham County line.
Randolph County 911 received a call at 2:12 p.m. about the fire. The Staley Fire Department’s first engine arrived in slightly more than one minute, with firefighters reporting smoke visible a mile away and flames coming through the roof upon arrival.
Both occupants escaped the home but sustained smoke inhalation, according to the Randolph County Fire Marshal’s Office. The mother also suffered burns to her arms while attempting to extinguish the fire before evacuating.
Randolph County EMS dispatched three ambulances to the scene — two to transport the mother and son to a landing zone for helicopter transport and one on standby. No update on their condition was available Wednesday evening.
Firefighters from Coleridge, Staley, Franklinville and Eastside fire departments responded, along with Chatham County Station 5. Officials declared the home uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross was called to assist.
The Randolph County Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the N.C. State Fire Marshal’s Office, is investigating the cause of the fire.
