ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — The North Carolina Zoo announced the unexpected death of Fenn, a 6-month-old giraffe calf, on Dec. 13 after the young animal became startled, bolted and collided with a nearby gate.
Fenn sustained severe head and neck trauma from the fall and died late that evening despite rapid medical intervention from veterinary staff.
The calf was born May 20, 2023, to first-time mother Leia, 14, and father Jack, 15. Fenn entered the world standing 6 feet tall and weighing 145 pounds, quickly becoming a focal point for Zoo visitors and supporters worldwide.
The Zoo conducted a public poll to name the calf, which garnered more than 100,000 votes. Fenn’s energetic and playful nature endeared him to both staff members and guests.
“Fenn was an energetic and vibrant addition to the giraffe herd (or tower) and quickly became a cherished member of the Zoo community,” Zoo officials said in a statement. “His playful antics and charming nature endeared him to staff and visitors alike.”
The Zoo brought in a grief counselor to support staff members, particularly caretakers who formed close bonds with Fenn since his birth.
Zoo officials requested respect and privacy for staff during the grieving process and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.
