ASHEBORO, N.C. — Two children died and their mother was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 73 early Monday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on May 30, 2022, on I-73/74 northbound at the Spero Road exit.
Ashlee Anne Caldwell-Crandell, 24, of Asheboro, was driving a Cadillac sedan when she attempted to exit I-73 onto Spero Road after passing the on-ramp. Caldwell-Crandell lost control of the vehicle, struck a highway sign and ran off the road before hitting a tree.
Two children, ages 7 and 9, were in the rear seat. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Caldwell-Crandell sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Westside Fire Department, Randolph County EMS, Ash-Rand Rescue and Baptist Air Care responded to the scene. Troopers said everyone in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor. Charges against Caldwell-Crandell are pending.
