ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — The North Carolina Zoo welcomed 1 million visitors during the 2021-2022 fiscal year ending June 30, breaking the Zoo’s all-time attendance record.
The milestone surpassed the previous record of 879,990 visitors set during the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
“We’re thrilled to welcome so many guests from North Carolina and around the world,” Zoo Director Pat Simmons said.
The record comes as the Zoo prepares for its most ambitious expansion in nearly three decades. Groundbreaking for Asia, the Zoo’s first new continent since North America opened in 1994, is planned for later this summer. The continent is expected to open to the public in 2026.
Simmons said the Zoo intends to build on its momentum with new programs and experiences for visitors.
“We are constantly striving to build upon our success through growing our programs and making our guest experience better than ever,” Simmons said.
