ASHEBORO, N.C. — Randolph County Emergency Services answered more than 128,000 calls to 9-1-1 last year, with roughly one call placed every 15 minutes around the clock, according to a review of emergency records.
Of the 128,580 calls received in 2022, 11 percent — or 14,089 calls — were hang-ups, misdials or open lines. Another 8.7 percent, or 11,186 calls, were duplicates where multiple people reported the same incident.
Theft accounted for the largest number of 9-1-1 calls reporting crime, with larceny and burglary combined totaling 4,145 calls, or 3.2 percent of all calls.
Retail stores generated the highest call volume for police response, with Walmart locations receiving the most service calls. The Asheboro Walmart at 1226 E. Dixie Drive received 712 calls for service, while the Randleman location received 237 calls, for a combined total of 949 calls.
“We do respond there a lot, but I wouldn’t say we are overburdened by them,” said Steven Leonard, chief of police for the Randleman Police Department. “It’s larcenies, but it’s also people leaving animals in cars, and welfare checks.”

The Asheboro Walmart ranked as the second most common call response address in the county, behind only the Asheboro Police Department, which logged 740 calls for citizens reporting crimes in person.
Randolph Hospital received 651 calls for service, followed by the Asheboro Summit Apartment Complex with 402 calls and the Randolph Mall with 343 calls.
Welfare checks accounted for 4.1 percent of calls after hang-ups and misdials were removed, followed by calls about suspicious persons or vehicles at 2.7 percent. Domestic calls comprised 2.6 percent of calls. Police also conducted 2,695 traffic stops.
