ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — A single-engine aircraft crashed on U.S. Highway 421 south of Greensboro Executive Airport on Tuesday morning, killing at least one person, authorities said.
The Vans RV-12 plane went down around 11 a.m. into a hill near the Monnett Road bridge in Guilford County, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash forced the closure of the Monnett Road bridge and one southbound lane of U.S. Highway 421.
The FAA confirmed two people were on board. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said one person was pronounced dead. The condition and identity of the second person aboard have not been released.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including Guilford County Emergency Services Hazmat 70, Southeast Volunteer Fire Department, Pleasant Garden Fire Department, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, State Highway Patrol and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
The Monnett Road bridge and all lanes of U.S. Highway 421 have since reopened, though officials urged drivers to exercise caution in the area.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
