ASHEBORO, N.C. — A juvenile died early Wednesday after falling from a bridge onto U.S. 421 and being struck by a vehicle, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
Randolph County 911 received the first report of the incident at 10:23 p.m. July 20, 2021, at U.S. 421 near Exit N.C. 49. Dispatchers sent fire and EMS units to the scene, along with sheriff’s deputies and the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation closed both lanes of U.S. 421 at 12:35 a.m. while investigators worked the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the victim had apparently parked a vehicle on the bridge near the N.C. 49 overpass overlooking U.S. 421 before falling onto the highway and being struck by an approaching vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation. The victim’s name was not released because the person was a juvenile.
