ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — A serious two-vehicle crash late Monday night on I-73/74 left one driver with life-threatening injuries and closed the northbound lanes for nearly three hours.

Around 10:30 p.m., Asheboro Fire/Rescue, Randolph County EMS, Asheboro Police, and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer near the Sunset Avenue exit on I-73/74.

The State Highway Patrol responded to investigate. According to a press release, 23-year-old Abdelaleem Mustafa Alnagar, of Colfax, N.C., was stopped on the shoulder of I-73/74 northbound in a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. When Alnagar attempted to merge back onto the interstate, he reportedly failed to yield to an approaching tractor-trailer.

The two vehicles collided, and the impact pushed the Jeep across the highway until both vehicles came to rest against a guardrail. The tractor-trailer driver was unharmed, but Alnagar sustained serious injuries and was transported to Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Alnagar faces charges for an unsafe movement violation and driving while his license was revoked.

The interstate was fully reopened around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, following the completion of the investigation.
