ASHEBORO, N.C. — Two men were arrested in connection with a daylight theft of a Honda generator from a local business, authorities said.
On July 2, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office arrested Nicholas James Toomes and Branson Cody Evans for the June 23 theft from James River Equipment on U.S. Highway 64 East.
The theft
A white male entered the store, picked up a Honda generator and ran out before getting into a tan or gold hatchback or Chevrolet Equinox. A white female was in the front passenger seat.
The vehicle fled the parking lot, made a left turn onto U.S. 64, then another left onto Presnell Street. A handicap placard hung from the rearview mirror.
The suspect who stole the generator was described as approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall with brown hair. He wore a plaid shirt, jeans and black shoes and had a blue face mask. He had a small tattoo on his left hand between his thumb and index finger, possibly of a ribbon.
Arrests and charges
Toomes was charged with felony larceny, felony possession of stolen property and felony conspiracy. He also was served with outstanding warrants for felony larceny out of Guilford County and misdemeanor larceny out of Davidson County. He is being held on a $6,500 secured bond.
Evans was charged with felony larceny, felony possession of stolen property, felony conspiracy and felony interference with an electronic monitoring device. He also was served with a misdemeanor larceny warrant out of Davidson County. He is being held on an $8,000 secured bond.
Both were scheduled to appear in Randolph County District Court on July 6, 2021.
