ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — The North Carolina Zoo will host “Boo at the NC Zoo,” its annual Halloween event, on four Saturdays and Sundays in October—Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The family-friendly daytime event features trick-or-treating stations throughout the park, live entertainment, animal encounters, Halloween-themed photo opportunities and costume contests. Admission includes a souvenir bag for trick-or-treaters.
Boo tickets cost $8 per child ages 2 and older, plus general Zoo admission. Zoo members receive discounted Boo tickets for $5 per child. Parents and guardians do not need to purchase Boo tickets.
Costume contests begin at 3 p.m. with separate categories for different age groups and families. Adults may wear costumes, but full-face masks are not permitted for anyone over age 13.
During Boo weekends, the Zoo’s animals will participate in Pumpkin Palooza, an enrichment activity where animals receive pumpkins. The event is available with general Zoo admission in both the Africa and North America sections.
The Zoo’s selection of Halloween candy prioritizes sustainability. Many commercial Halloween candies contain palm oil harvested from tropical rainforests, destroying habitats for orangutans and other wildlife. The Zoo offers only candy made with sustainably harvested palm oil.
All activities are age-appropriate and avoid screaming or high-risk COVID-19 concerns, according to the Zoo. The event is held rain or shine, and activities are subject to change based on CDC and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services guidelines.
