ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) – Yesterday, despite a warning from the North Carolina Forestry Service about high fire danger, fire crews in Randolph County were called to battle at least six uncontrolled fires.
The Forestry Service had cautioned that the warm, dry conditions, combined with low humidity and gusty winds reaching up to 25 mph, posed a significant fire risk. While they advised against outdoor burning, no formal ban was issued.
Several individuals disregarded or were unaware of the fire danger, leading to multiple 911 calls.
Firefighters responded to various locations in Asheboro, Randleman, and Liberty to contain the fires. Two incidents occurred almost simultaneously on the county’s eastern side. On Pine Lakes Drive, flames spread to nearby trees and grass, damaging an outbuilding and endangering two homes. Similarly, on Kennedy Country Drive, a blaze threatened a residence, tying up resources from multiple fire departments.
As of March 2, 2022, the North Carolina Forest Service has reported 112 fires, which have burned approximately 197 acres.
Officials continue to urge residents to take increased fire risks seriously and exercise caution with any outdoor burning activities.
