ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man has been arrested and charged with stabbing a woman multiple times on Sunday, police said. The victim was transported to a hospital after a child reported the attack.
On May 8, 2022, Asheboro Police Department officers responded to Pelican Snowballs after a child ran into the business reporting that their mother had been stabbed. Officers responded to the business and a residence on Washington Avenue, where they located the victim, identified as Renalta Smith.
Smith had been stabbed multiple times and was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.
Following a tip, police located the suspect, Kelly Lashaun Wiley, at the Dollar General on Zoo Parkway. Wiley was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted first-degree murder and assault on a child under 12.
Wiley is being held in the Randolph County Jail on a $1 million secured bond. It is unknown how the victim knew the suspect or what motivated the attack.
