ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man has been arrested after being found unconscious in a stolen vehicle on a Trinity road, authorities said. The vehicle had been taken from a store in Winston-Salem with a child inside and was later involved in a larceny at a Thomasville store.
On May 21, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Meadowbrook Drive and North Carolina Highway 62 in Trinity after a 911 caller reported an unconscious driver blocking traffic.
Deputies found Raymond Henry O’Neal unconscious in the driver’s seat of a white SUV. When a deputy opened the door to check on him, O’Neal woke and attempted to start the vehicle and put it in drive. He was ordered to stop.
As deputies attempted to detain O’Neal, he refused to cooperate and became combative. The original 911 caller assisted deputies in restraining O’Neal until additional deputies arrived. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to conduct a field sobriety test.
Detectives determined the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Sheetz in Winston-Salem with a child still inside. The vehicle was later involved in a larceny at a Thomasville Walmart, and the child was abandoned at some point.
Electronics with anti-theft devices and merchandise from the store were visible in the vehicle. Detectives from the Winston-Salem Police Department and Thomasville Police Department responded to collect evidence.
O’Neal was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, impeding the flow of traffic, misdemeanor resisting a public officer and misdemeanor assault on a government official. He received a $41,000 secured bond on these charges.
He was also served with a Thomasville Police warrant for misdemeanor larceny and Forsyth County warrants for felony first-degree kidnapping and felony larceny of a motor vehicle. He received an additional $100,000 secured bond on the Forsyth County charges.
A first appearance was set for May 23, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
