ASHEBORO, N.C. — A woman is recovering from surgery after being shot by her husband in an apartment complex parking lot Wednesday, authorities said.

Deneene Lynn Baxter, 55, was wounded at Ashewood Circle. Officers with the Asheboro Police Department arrived at the scene, provided first aid and transported her to a hospital in Greensboro, where she underwent surgery.

An investigation determined her husband, Barry Lynn Baxter Jr., 40, fired the shot. He was arrested at the scene.

Baxter was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in a local confinement facility and discharging a firearm in the city.

He was booked into the Randolph County Jail and remains in custody under a $25,000 secured bond.
