RANDLEMAN, N.C. — A prison escapee who fled a work detail in Laurinburg and stole a dump truck has been captured after a three-day search across Randolph County.
Richard Alexander Mundy was taken into custody Oct. 23, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received calls about a suspicious person on Randleman Road near Hockett Dairy Road. Deputies confirmed it was Mundy and arrested him. He was transferred to the custody of the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
On Oct. 21, 2021, Mundy escaped from a work detail in Laurinburg. The North Carolina Department of Corrections reported he stole a tan and gray 1994 Chevrolet 3500 dump truck.
Mundy is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is serving a 28-year-plus prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon and was considered dangerous.
Mundy was spotted on White Oak Street in Asheboro around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 and later on Buffalo Ford Road, reportedly driving a white single-cab Chevrolet truck, possibly a 1999-2003 model with a black flatbed and side racks. That vehicle was also believed to be stolen.
On Oct. 22 at approximately 8:30 a.m., a Randleman Police Department officer located the stolen dump truck unattended on North Main Street near New Salem Road. The North Carolina Department of Corrections responded to investigate.
