ASHEBORO, N.C. — A mother and son were arrested after a confrontation over stolen items resulted in a shooting in Thomasville on June 26, 2021, leaving the victim in critical condition.
Randolph County Sheriff’s deputies responded at 10:40 p.m. to a report of an assault on Stonehenge Road. Upon arrival, they found a gunshot victim lying in the road on Fuller Mill Road and airlifted him to a hospital in critical condition. He was later listed in stable condition.
The confrontation
Elva Hughes Skipper and Steven Craig Skipper had gone to the victim’s home to confront him about stolen items, according to the Sheriff’s Office. As the victim drove down his driveway, Elva Skipper fired at him with a .22-caliber handgun, but he continued driving.
“I shot the pistol at him and I think I hit him,” Elva Skipper said in a 911 call, claiming the victim tried to run over her son.
Assault at the intersection
When the victim reached the intersection of Fuller Mill Road and Green Tree Road, witnesses said he opened his vehicle door and fell onto the pavement. Nearby drivers stopped to help.
When the Skippers arrived at the scene, Steven Craig Skipper assaulted the victim, according to witnesses. A 911 caller reported seeing Elva Skipper standing over the victim and smelling alcohol on her breath. Another caller reported the victim had been shot twice and said the Skippers kicked him while he was on the ground.
Fire department personnel confiscated the .22-caliber handgun from Elva Skipper’s vehicle.
Charges and arrest
Elva Hughes Skipper was charged with felony attempted murder and felony conspiracy to commit murder. She is being held on a $2 million secured bond.
Steven Craig Skipper was charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder and misdemeanor assault and battery. He is being held on a $1 million secured bond.
Both were scheduled to appear in Randolph County District Court on June 28, 2021. The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
