ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) — Central North Carolina is bracing for a winter storm expected to bring snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions starting late Friday.

All week forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh have been watching models to see how a developing winter storm system will impact central North Carolina. As the storm draws closer, forecasters are increasingly confident that bitterly cold temperatures, snow, ice, hazardous travel conditions, and power outages, will impact our state starting Friday evening through Saturday morning, with varying impacts across the region.

Current forecasts predict that Friday afternoon light snow is expected to develop during the evening commute. By overnight, warmer air could lead to a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain in some areas. Precipitation is expected to taper off Saturday morning, though icy conditions could last into Sunday.

North of I-85 is expected to see primarily snow, with moderate accumulation. Between I-85 and the southern counties, a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will occur, depending on temperatures. South of I-85, more rain is expected, but freezing rain and icy roads are possible as temperatures drop.

Potential Hazards

  • Travel Hazards: Roads could become slick, especially overnight. Black ice is a concern through Sunday morning, and drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Power Outages: Freezing rain in southern areas could weigh down power lines and trees, increasing the risk of outages.
  • Extreme Cold: Temperatures will dip into the teens and 20s Thursday night and remain cold.. Overnight lows may pose additional risks for those without heat.

Meteorologists caution that the exact track and timing of the storm could still change. A slower-moving system could bring more ice to southern areas, while a faster-moving storm would result in more snow and less ice. The NWS advises residents to stay updated on the latest forecasts over the next 24-48 hours.
